Frequently Asked Questions

Why does purity matter?
doTERRA came to life in 2008 to set a higher standard for essential oil purity and potency. The CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade quality standard requires precise care and effort to protect what nature has created. Where the oil is sourced is essential. The composition of the plant will vary greatly based on the location, climate, and environment that it's grown in. doTERRA has carefully selected farmers who have mastered their craft in locations where plants have been grown traditionally for many years.
Are essential oils safe to consume?
Absolutely! According to Dr. Joshua Yorgason, MD – Otolaryngologist, for thousands of years humans have ingested plants in the form of food as well as extracts as herbal health products and teas from leaves and flowers, all of which contain essential oils. The local effect may be felt more strongly when applied internally compared to when applied to the skin because the nerves in the mucosa are closer to the surface, often more numerous, and can be more easily stimulated compared to the nerves in the skin. Although the skin is thicker and seems to be less fragile than the mucous membranes, the reality is that, like the skin, the mucosa has many features that are protective, and therefore conducive to the use of essential oils. When essential oils contact the mucosa they are absorbed, to some degree, at the initial point of contact. However, much of the oil will be continually diluted by the mucous. Rapid absorption and constant dilution allow the oils to have an incredible impact. Many studies show that essential oils can have a positive effect when there is a problem with the stomach’s mucous membranes. In fact internal use of essential oils may be the best method to help improve function of the gut and improve digestion, because the oils can get to the area of need immediately.
Should I dilute essential oils?
Sometimes the topical use of essential oils may induce irritation, especially on young or sensitive skin. To decrease the likelihood of developing a sensitivity, it is advisable to use a carrier oil (such as fractionated coconut oil) to dilute the more potent oils. or when trying an oil for the first time. The recommended dilution ratio is typically 1 drop of essential oil to three drops of carrier oil. A diluted mixture can be prepared in advance by mixing the oils in an empty glass bottle or for a single dose by mixing the oils directly in the hands. There are 3 main classifications of oils for topical use: Neat, Dilute, and Sensitive. • Neat: Essential oils categorized as “neat” can be applied topically without dilution on most people. These oils are considered mild and generally do not induce skin sensitivity. Examples of “neat” essential oils are Frankincense, Lavender, Melaleuca, Melissa, and Sandalwood. • Sensitive: “Sensitive” oils are those that should be diluted before use on sensitive skin. Examples of “sensitive” oils are Peppermint, Ginger, Eucalyptus, Wintergreen, and Black Pepper. • Dilute: If categorized as “dilute,” essential oils should be diluted with a carrier oil before topical application in every case. Oils that fall into this category are those with a high proportion of constituents that are especially potent, such as phenols. Examples of essential oils that require dilution are Cassia, Cinnamon, Clove, Oregano, and Thyme.
Are doTERRA essential oils organic?
Yes. doTERRA’s quality standard for essential oils (CPTG) exceeds industry standards. Because organic certification varies from country to country, province to province, and, in the US, from state to state, it is not currently possible to acquire all oils under certified organic status. The reason we often say doTERRA essential oils are “beyond organic” is because they go through rigorous pharmaceutical level testing that ensures there are NO pesticides in the bottles. The Certified Organic labeled food that we eat has NOT been tested after the farmer obtains the certification for his produce. Because the farmer who lives next door could be spraying THEIR crops, the wind could blow these pesticides over onto the Organic Farmer’s crops. doTERRA ensures the absence of ANYTHING other than the pure plant extract with their many rounds of testing. Do the oils interfere with other medication?
Essential oils have a long history of safety. In fact, when used congruently with medications, there have been minimal reports showing that essential oils cause significant interactions. By far the best way to ensure that your experience with essential oils will be positive is to communicate openly with your physician regarding your intended use for the oils. In the frequent case that your physician has no knowledge of essential oils and their chemistry and how they work, please visit: and www.pubmed

What is dosage?
To create these recommendations, Dr. David K. Hill, D.C. balanced effective ranges of essential oils with known safety data. It is important that essential oil users stay within the Ideal Amount ranges to derive the maximum benefit from using the essential oils. In fact, overwhelming the body with too much essential oil can sometimes lead to unwanted outcomes. This is because cells in the body utilize complex chemical reactions to metabolize the oils. It is never appropriate to exceed the metabolic capacity of the cells. The Ideal Amount column states how much total essential oil a user should take at a time. This amount can be repeated every 4-6 hours, for amounts no greater than the 24-hour Maximum amount. These are general recommendations that don’t take into account the individual health and experience levels of the user. doTERRA essential oils are very potent and everyone will react differently to them. It is important to be aware of one’s own unique health circumstances and adjust accordingly. We should be more moderate with our essential oil use when our health is in anyway compromised.
Does sustainability matter?
YES, for several reasons. 1. In addition to supplying the highest quality essential oils doTERRA is committed to making a positive difference in the lives of farmers, harvesters, and distillers who contribute to doTERRA’s oil production. With over 100 essential oils in its product line, doTERRA sources its oils from over 40 countries – more than half of which could be considered developing countries. To ensure that small scale farmers and harvesters in disadvantaged areas are treated ethically, doTERRA has introduced an initiative called Co-Impact Sourcing which seeks to develop long-term, mutually beneficial supplier partnerships while creating sustainable jobs and providing reliable income in underdeveloped areas. If the growers and doTERRA’s practices are not sustainable, these people will not continue to thrive and support themselves and their families. 2. If the plants go away the essential oils and products go away. 3. There are governing bodies to ensure sustainability of the precious plants on our planet. What does the price reflect?
There is a wide range of essential oil cost and these are determined by the frequency the plant can be harvested, the availability of the plant and how MUCH of the plant can be extracted at one time. For example, Lemon essential oil is $10 wholesale. The oil is cold pressed from the rind of lemons which are prolific in the region we get them from and the yield is rather great from one lemon. In contrast, Rose essential oil can be quite costly because it takes 2 and a half dozen roses to gain one drop of oil. Melissa essential oil similarly requires a lot of flowers to produce just one drop of oil. Frankincense trees can only be scored twice a year to protect the trees and sustain them and the families who depend on the livelihood they gain from the essential oil. There are only so many frankincense trees in the world. We are all familiar with the concept of “getting what we pay for” and this is especially true when it comes to essential oil quality, potency and purity.
How does supplementing my healthcare with alternative medicine greatly improve results?
“Today’s medicine is in the midst of an undeniable crisis. Calls to reform healthcare are in the forefront of economic and political discussions worldwide. Economic pressures reduce the amount of time physicians can spend with patients contributing to burnout among medical staff and endangering the patient iatrogenically. Politicians are getting involved as the public is calling for more affordable healthcare. A new paradigm must be embraced in order to address all aspects of this dilemma. It is clear that science and technology have resulted in vastly improved understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of disease, but the emphasis on science and technology to the exclusion of other elements of healing has also served to limit the development of a model that humanizes healthcare. The healing of a patient must include more than the biology and chemistry of their physical body; by necessity, it must include the mental, emotional and spiritual aspects. Because of these challenges, the development of an integral healthcare system that is rooted in appropriate regulation and supported by rigorous scientific evidence is the direction that many models of integrative healthcare are moving towards in the 21st century.” (Taken from the US National Library of Medicine national Institutes of Health). The good news is that doTERRA is now partnering with medical professionals to bring CPTG essential oils into the mainstream healthcare practices. In the near future, clinics will be built around the country that integrate alternative practices with traditional allopathic medicine for the best outcomes of the patients on all levels.
